DR. EDWIN G. HURLEY
Senior Pastor of the South Highland Presbyterian Church
With pleasure today we welcome Dr. Edwin G. Hurley. Ed is the Senior Pastor of the South Highland Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, Alabama. Ed is in his 17th year of service at SHPC. SHPC is an historic congregation, founded in 1888, located near downtown Birmingham, seeking to help all become “Fully Alive with the Passion of Christ,” and this fall celebrating its 130th year of Christian witness.
Ed grew up in El Dorado, Arkansas. He graduated from McCallie School, Chattanooga, Tennessee. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University with a double major in history and English, his Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, his Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. Ed did graduate study at New College, the University of Edinburgh as recipient of the Graduate Study Fellowship for Parish Ministry Award from Princeton Theological Seminary.
Dr. Hurley has served churches in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Monroe, Louisiana; and Bowling Green, Kentucky. Ed and Gayle have three children. Daughter, Catherine, a graduate from Vanderbilt, serves as a Nurse Practitioner at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. She is married to Hunter Mize, a Computer Entrepreneur with Dave Ramsey Companies, Franklin, and the two of them live in Nashville with their newborn son, Winfield. Son, Stuart, a graduate of the college of Charleston in Business and Philosophy, graduated at UAB with his MBA and Masters in Health Sciences Hospital Administration and is working in Florida in Hospital Management. Son, Peter, is a graduate of San Francisco Art Institute and is currently working in San Francisco in art, music and as a mentor through ARC to mentally challenged adults. Wife, Gayle is a portrait artist, bee keeper, and former Director of Children’s Music at South Highland.
Ed is active in his Presbytery and will serve as a Commissioner to General Assembly this June in St. Louis. He served on the Committee on Ministry and as Chair of the Permanent Judicial Commission. He recently served as Chair of the Board of the Outreach Foundation of the Presbyterian Church, which coordinates international mission work with the PCUSA and several other Presbyterian bodies, with whom he traveled in a delegation to Syria and Lebanon in 2017, encouraging local Christians, preaching in Latakia, Syria, the largest Presbyterian congregation in the evangelical Presbyterian Synod of Syria and Lebanon, Advisory Board of Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, and Alumni Council of Princeton Theological Seminary.
REVEREND REBEKAH CLOSE LEMON
Executive Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Georgia
With pleasure today we welcome Reverend Rebekah Close LeMon. Rev. LeMon serves as Executive Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Georgia. She grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (A.B. In English), Columbia Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Emory University School of Law (J.D.). She practiced law as a commercial litigator with a large Atlanta firm before joining the staff of First Presbyterian in 2011.
Rebekah is married to Joel, who is Associate Professor of Old Testament at Emory University and the Candler School of Theology. Joel and Rebekah are the proud parents of two wonderful children: James, age 11, who would rather fish than anything else in the world, and Caroline, age almost-eight, who adores music and creates art out of things her parents try to recycle. The LeMons live in Decatur, Georgia with their very old rescue mutt, Katie.

Church in Greensboro NC. He has served previous churches in
Wilmington NC, Lancaster SC, Charlotte NC, and Colonial Heights
VA. He and his wife Elaine have two adult children, Meagan who is
married and lives in Raleigh, and Richard who lives in Winston Salem.
